Director of the Center for Knowledge Economy and Technology Transfer

Dr. Majid bin Kamal Nour

The pillars of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia 2030 vision are based on creating a vibrant society, a thriving economy and an ambitious nation. The role of universities comes in contributing to the achievement of these foundations through knowledge and technology and transforming them into products with an economic impact that reflects on the vitality of society and highlights the nation's ambition. King Abdulaziz University works to direct scientific research to serve the needs of society in various industrial, commercial, educational, economic, environmental and engineering fields in order to transform knowledge and scientific research at the university for an economic value that contributes to supporting the local economy, building policies and legislation and creating jobs, and also contributing in the long term to support self-resources For the university. Therefore, the need to establish a knowledge-based economy and technology transfer center at the university has emerged, which works on communication between the private sector and the university in terms of scientific research outputs and patents in order to support the transformation of knowledge into economic value.

Technology Transfer

Technology transfer is defined as the conveying of technology from one party to another, whether it is an individual, educational institution, organization, industrial sector, or a labor market. This conveying is usually between two universities, a university and an industrial sector, or from one company to another. The party shares its technical knowledge, skills, the manufacturing and production process and all its scientific and practical knowledge with the other party to enable it to use it and bring it to practice either through a product or a company or even a change in policies and procedures. As a result, knowledge becomes of a real impact on society, whether from an economic or social point of view.

Among the most important goals of technology transfer is the diversification of the university’s income sources and the utilization of its capabilities. In addition, strengthening the position of the educational institution among its peers, and the mutual relationship between scientists and industry. This would help opening up the way for scientists to cover local industrial needs and harnessing the minds of researchers and innovators to find innovative solutions to community challenges and transforming knowledge into an economic value. Thus, contributes in the national product and community service. These goals are attained by managing the reception of ideas, evaluating them, applying appropriate intellectual protection, and then taking into practice.

How the Center Works

The work of the center starts from the submission of the idea by the researcher, where the center evaluates and reviews it, and in case it is not compatible with the evaluation mechanism, it is returned to the principal investigator to reformulate and amend it. In the event that it passes the evaluation, the researcher is assisted, counseling and technical support are determined, and appropriate protection is determined for it, whether it is a patent, copyright, trademark, or intellectual property.

After that, the application for registering the appropriate protection of intellectual property is submitted to the designated offices, locally or internationally. Then the researcher is directed to start the process of modeling and testing in case the idea to do so. In addition, they will be linked with other researchers from different fields to work with them and benefit from their experiences to develop the idea. Then the intellectual property is marketed to the local and international market, and thus, either by selling or transferring into a start-up company. This will help creating new jobs that contribute to adding economic value to the society.

Our Goals

Support

  • Supporting talent, creativity and innovation, especially among university researchers
  • Supporting the process of transferring ideas to products of economic value to build a knowledge economy society
  • Activating communication between the scientific research sector at the university and the private sector by directing scientific research within the university to serve the needs of the private and public sectors
  • Effective contribution to supporting the creative orientation in society and linking it to the university
  • Spreading the culture of diligence and perseverance to access patents by targeting all parties and individuals related to the university

Investment

  • Investing the culture of scientific research at the university by converting it to the development direction that serves the needs of society on the one hand and familiarizes researchers with the requirements of manufacturing and converting ideas to commercial products of economic value in society
  • Increasing the investment of the university’s outputs from scientific research to diversify funding and partnership programs
  • Transforming ideas and research into products, programs and services that are marketed to the local or international market or through small and medium enterprises emanating from the university through intellectual property protection, incubation of ideas, and partnerships with the private sector to support emerging companies emanating from the university
  • Establishing local and international partnerships to transfer and localize technology to support local production and create new jobs
